We have three dogs – Mercury, Balder and Hermes. Mercury was the runt of his litter and we fell in love with him. He and his brother Hermes have always been self fed. He has an amazing amount of energy and has always been slightly underweight. There is no doubt Mercury is a fussy eater.
At home, my partner and I both love to cook. It was just natural for us to supplement Mercury’s diet with some goodies that are really good for him. I have to admit, it is a little scary when you see recalls on dog treats because of fatalities. In 2012 there were over 40 recalls and withdrawals on the “Animal & Veterinary” tab on the FDA website.
I really does my heart good to see Mercury begging at the oven door while we’re making these healthy treats.
Balder is on a strict diet of just one cup of food per day. For the past few years the vet has complimented us on Balder’s weight and how important managing his weight is – especially because of his breed and his age of 11 years old.
I like that we can give Balder a sweet potato treat that we make at home and not have to worry about ruining his diet. I’m sure he’s glad too.
Hermes is not over weight. Hermes is not under weight. Hermes just loves the treats!
